A True Survivor Story

"How I overcame Breast Cancer"

Dealing with cancer can be overwhelming, whether you’re newly diagnosed, a survivor or a caregiver. To inspire you, here is a true story of a young Indonesian lady in her 30s who was diagnosed with breast and liver cancers in 2008. She has gone through pain and depression to overcome her cancer disease and nearly lost everything she had. We hope this story will give you the courage, hope and faith to fight and persevere what seems to be insurmountable obstacles. What were your initial feelings when you discover you have cancer?

I am diagnosed with breast and liver cancers by my doctor last year. When I was told I have both breast and liver cancers, I immediately broke down and cried. In my mind, I felt I was going to lose everything as my life would soon come to an end. And I couldn’t help being pessimistic about my life because one of my sisters passed away in September 2007 after 2 years of struggle with breast cancer. Thus, when I was told that I have breast cancer plus cancer of my liver, I was very shocked and cried till my tears ran dry and had no appetite either. I felt lost and depressed at that time, not knowing what to expect and do.

How has cancer affect your lifestyle & close family members?

My life was turned upside down after I started seeking treatment. First, I spent a large percentage of my income and savings on chemotherapy treatments. Second, I lost my job due to my medical condition. For instance, I used to model for commercials and advertisements for hair products, but because of my chemotherapy that resulted in loss of my hair, I couldn’t take on such assignments anymore. Thirdly, my relationship with my boy friend came to an end. My life before breast and liver cancers was full of hope and positivity. But right now, I am frequently surrounded by needles, doctors, nurses, medications and other sick patients. So, to keep my mind free from negative thoughts, I continue to be active by doing some cooking at home, shopping, swimming and hanging out with my relatives and friends. As for my family members, my condition has affected them in everyway, emotionally and mentally especially my parents and my two elder sisters. It was less than six months after the passing away of my cancer stricken sister that they were informed about my diagnosis. Since then, our family life started to change. We appreciate our relationship with each other more than before and we are spending more time as a family. Such activities have bonded our family together.

What are the treatment/s given to you so far and for how long you have been treated?

I received 12 sessions of chemotherapy from July till November 2008 and due to some financial difficulties, I’ve stopped for a while. I have continued with 6 more sessions of chemotherapy between April to August this year and went through breast mastectomy and liver surgery in the month of August. Currently, I am continuing with my chemotherapy sessions.

Do you see positive outcomes from the treatments given to you so far?

Yes, from my imaging reports, I was told by my doctor that the tumours have shrunk and it is quite obvious comparing with previous reports.

I have to admit it is not easy for a woman to go through chemotherapy. However, after I managed to overcome the initial fears and the pain, I have learnt to appreciate life even more. Furthermore, through this difficult period, it has taught me to be wiser, more optimistic towards life and to be more patient. I have realized I cannot go through life independently without relying on encouragements and help from my family members and close friends.

Any word of advice or encouragement for other cancer patients you would like to give?

When you have cancer, it does not necessary mean that your life will come to an end. Do not ever think that your cancer will have a final say in your life and your time of death even if your report says so. If you have a religion, take this time to focus on your faith. Do not get too depressed. Do some healthy activities like jogging or walking in the park, go for a holiday with your family or catch up with your friends. I would also suggest trusting your doctor who is treating you. That’s rather important. I can share with you honestly, living with cancer is a rocky road that a person has to go through, but we have to overcome and continue to live. My final word is, take it easy and find opportunities to make yourself happy! Read more personal stories >>
